Nick Birch
Nick has been the Musical Director of Nantwich Concert Band since 2014 and has enjoyed a wonderful decade of growth and development with NCB, taking the band from strength to strength.
Nick Birch attained his Masters degree from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) studying Trombone under Robert Holliday and Roger Cutts. As part of the RNCM Trombone Ensemble, Nick won the Emory Remington Trombone Ensemble Prize in 2016 and will perform at the International Trombone Festival in New York later this year. Nick also did his undergraduate studies at the RNCM on Euphonium studying under David Thornton and Steven Mead.
A brass specialist and talented performer, Nick has enjoyed tenures with several North-West Brass Bands, including Pemberton, Fairey’s and Foden’s Brass Bands. Nick held the 2nd Trombone seat with Foden’s Band between 2015 and 2024, enjoying great success with the band including winning the three National Championships (2018, 2021, 2022) and the British Open (2023).
Nick is a former member and co-founder of the Slidin’ About Trombone Quartet, who were finalists in the Royal Overseas League Competition 2015. With the quartet, he enjoyed a wide variety of engagements with the groups including working as a resident group for the Live Music Now! Foundation and being an ambassador for plastic instrument manufacturer, pBone.
Alongside his role as MD at NCB, Nick is also the Musical Director at Keele University Concert Band and The Marple Brass Band. Nick continues to play with bands regularly as a freelance musician.
